Lissia's Xena/Ares Fan Fiction
Xena watches as
Cyrene returns to Amphipolis. Gabrielle
walks up behind her and puts a hand on the warrior’s shoulder, “Xena, are you
going to be alright?” Xena nods, “Yeah,
I’ll be fine. But, you still owe me
those dumplings with the red stuff in them.”
Gabrielle laughs, “I know. Don’t
worry, I picked up the stuff for them in Amphipolis before we left. I’ll get started on them. Why don’t you go for a walk, you look like
you need it,” she suggests. Xena nods
and glances around the camp quickly, “ I think you’re right,” she says,
distractedly walking out of the camp.
Gabrielle watches her go with a shake of her head.
Xena walks through the forest and stops when she reaches a small clearing. “That was quite a battle,” a strong male voice says from behind her. She turns sharply and stares at Ares coldly, “What do you want?” He raises an eyebrow, “Other than the obvious?” She nods and he continues, “How did you do that?” She shrugs, “I didn’t care whether I lived or died and you weren’t trying very hard,” she says evenly. He smiles, “You caught onto that, did you? I thought you would.” She rolls her eyes, “Are we done yet?” She asks impatiently. He ignores her, “You know, the Furies were just waiting for a reason to release you. They know as well as you do, that I am not your father.” She shrugs, nonchalantly, “It doesn’t matter. Either way, you failed.” He smiles, “Not really. I didn’t expect it to work too well. Actually, it worked better than I thought it would, after all, you almost went through with it. But, no, I knew you would find a angel to play on. I didn’t think it would be that angel, but hey, it worked,” he says laughing. “So, this was just some little game,” she says angrily. He nods quickly, “Yeah, that’s just about right. Now, don’t give me that look, Xena. I had to do something, I was getting bored.” Anger flashes through her eyes as she slaps him hard, “Bored? I’m so glad I could entertain you, that just makes my life so much better. By the Gods, Ares, what is wrong with you? You’ve done some pretty low things lately, but this just takes the cake.” He runs a hand over his cheek, slightly stunned, then recovers, “Cool off Xena. And, Xena, it’s not very nice to slap your patron deity,” he says. “Patron deity?” She questions sarcastically, “I’m through with this,” she adds, walking away from him. He grabs her wrist and spins her into him. Holding her tightly, he whispers, “That’s not very nice.” She tries to pull away, but soon gives up, “Now what do you want?” She asks as she looks up at him. He smiles evilly, “You,” he says catching her lips with his own. She pushes against him and eventually kicks his feet out from under him. He goes down backwards, dragging Xena down on top of him. He smiles at her, “If you wanted more all you had to do was ask,” he says, sarcastically. She pushes against him, trying to get up, but he rolls over and pins her in place. She glares up at him, “Get off,” she orders. He pushes down on her harder, “No. You’re going to listen to me, then I’m going to leave.” She stops struggling, “Fine. Talk then.” He smiles down at her, “I might have been a little over zealous before, I’m sorry.” Before she can reply, he’s gone. Xena lies on the ground, letting his words sink in, then she goes back to the camp.
Gabrielle watches as Xena returns to camp, rubbing her shoulder. “Xena, are you alright?” She asks. Xena nods, “Yeah, I’m fine. I guess that fight left me a little sore,” she says, removing her armor and stretching her arm out. Gabrielle hands her a plate of food, “Is Ares your father?” Xena laughs and shoves a dumpling into her mouth, “That depends on how you look at it. He taught me most of what I know today and he took care of me. So in that way, yes he is. But, our relationship wasn’t one of father and daughter. Gabrielle, he wasn’t just my mentor and patron deity, he was my lover.” Gabrielle gasps and her eyes shoot open widely, “Lover in what sense of the word?” Xena smiles, remembering the past, “Every sense of the word,” she says, twirling her Chakram, “Gabrielle, you have to understand, things were different then.” Gabrielle grabs her hand, “I know. You were evil then.” Xena shakes her head, “It wasn’t just that. He was different then or maybe I just didn’t see his heartless side. It’s a shame that things have turned soar between us, it used to be easy for me to love him. Now, well, I don’t know.” A shiver goes down her spine and she jerks away from Gabrielle, throwing her Chakram at a nearby tree. It stops in midair, then falls to the ground with a clank. Gabrielle stares at it wide eyed. “Gabrielle, go for a walk,” Xena orders, staring at her fallen Chakram. Gabrielle looks at her, surprised, “Xena, I don’t think that’s such a good idea.” “Go,” Xena says roughly. Gabrielle nods, grabs her staff, and walks out of the camp.
Watching Gabrielle go, Xena sighs, “Alright Ares, show yourself.” She stares at her fallen Chakram, then jerks as strong hands grab her shoulders from behind. “That was an interesting conversation. It’s a shame you noticed me, I would have loved to hear the rest of it.” She shrugs his hands off, then scoops up her Chakram, “I thought you were going to leave.” He nods, “I did, but when I heard you talking about us, I decided to listen in. To think, I thought you had no fond memories of us. How wrong I was.” Holding her Chakram in her hand, she backhands him. “You know, I’m getting tired of that,” he says sarcastically. She smiles smugly, “And I’m getting tired of you harassing me,” she says bluntly, then adds, “Now, leave.” He smiles, “Uh no,” he says, putting a hand on her shoulder and wrapping the other around her waist from behind. She jerks away, then winces at the pain in her shoulder. “What’s wrong?” Ares asks gently. “Nothing,” she replies, rubbing her shoulder. He laughs, “Half God, huh? Sit down.” She smirks at him, “No.” He pushes down on her shoulders causing her to wince again, “Sit down,” he says firmly. She sits down, but jerks away when he starts to rub her shoulder, “Don’t,” she says quietly. He ignores her and begins to massage her shoulder again, “Relax, Xena. Let me help. After all, I caused the damage.” She leans into his touch for a moment, then catching herself, she jerks away fiercely. Standing up, she asks, “And why would you want to help me? And why would I let you help me?” Her voice is hard and her face is set. He smiles and stands behind her, wrapping his arms around her. He whispers in her ear, “Because I love you.” She turns sharply, anger flashing in her blue eyes, but he isn’t there. She collapses by the fire and takes to sharpening her sword with shaky hands.
Gabrielle returns to camp to see Xena staring blankly at the fire, her sword and Chakram on the ground beside her. She comes up behind her and places a hand on Xena’s shoulder. Xena jerks away harshly, “Go away, you sick bastard!” Gabrielle’s eyes widen and she sits beside Xena, “It’s just me, I guess things didn’t go well.” Xena looks over at her, “Oh sorry Gabrielle. I thought you were-.” “I know,” Gabrielle interrupts, “Do you want to talk about what happened?” Xena shakes her head, “No, there’s nothing to talk about.” Gabrielle looks doubtful, “Xena, I really think-.” Xena shoots her an irritated look, “No Gabrielle,” she says standing up and walking towards the forest. “Xena! Where are you going?” Gabrielle asks, holding her sword and Chakram out. Xena glances at her and shakes her head, “For a walk,” she says, rushing away.
Out of sight of the camp, Xena breaks into a blind run. She runs until strong arms grab her as she rushes past a group of bushes. Ares pulls her close as she fights to get away. Xena turns, irritated, and tries to put the pinch on him. Ares laughs, “Xena, it’s a nice trick for mortals, but it’s not going to do much against a God.” She jerks away and begins to storm off again, but he catches her arm and stops her, “Is this how it’s going to be from now on? You’re just going to storm off whenever you see me?” She stares at him stonily, “That’s right. I have no desire to be anywhere near you,” she says. “And why not? Is it because of what I did with the Furies or what I said?” She says nothing and jerks her arm free of his grip. He nods, “I see. Fine, if this is how you want it to be, then fine. Goodbye Xena.” He disappears and Xena sighs, collapsing to the ground. Tears begin to fall down her cheeks, then a pair of arms wrap around her gently. She turns with a look of confusion to see Ares kneeling behind her. “I thought you were going to leave me alone,” she says as sternly as possible with tears still falling onto her cheeks. He wipes the tears away, “Sorry to disappoint you. When I saw you collapse, I had to come back. Anyway, it’s such a rarity to see you cry, I didn’t want to miss it.” She smiles a little and wipes a few tears from her cheeks, “Alright. I’m fine, you can go now.” He pulls her back to lean on him and begins to inch closer to her. She puts a hand over his lips, “No,” she says firmly as she pushes away from him and stands up. He follows her and grabs her wrist gently, “And why not? Is it more of that good vs. evil thing? When will you learn? There is no evil, not with Gods. Why do you pull away from me every time? Is it because of what I do? Or is it because of what we have?” “Had,” she says quietly. “Have,” he argues, stepping closer to her. He nods and continues, “But, that’s just it isn’t it? Xena, just because you changed sides, it doesn’t mean that anything between us has to change.” She runs a hand over his cheek, “But they have changed. Ares, I’m not a child anymore and I’m not going to sit here and think there was ever or can ever be anything between us. I grew up and you can’t manipulate me anymore.” Anger flashes through his eyes, “Xena, don’t lie to yourself. What we had was different. I’ve never been through anything like that before and don’t expect to again.” She smiles, “That’s because I stood up to you.” “No, it’s because I loved you and I still do,” he says, moving closer to her. Anger and hurt flash through her eyes, then she looks down, “I know,” she says softly. “But it won’t work,” she adds, looking up at him. She’s shocked to see pain in his expression, “Ares, I’m sorry.” He moves closer to her and wraps his arms around her. “Give me a chance,” he whispers in her ear, “After all, you changed, why can’t I? I have proper motivation.” She looks up at him, surprised, then moves closer and catches his lips with hers. He pulls her closer, then let’s her back away. “Xena,” he starts, unsure of what to say. She nods and smiles, “It’s alright. I suppose we could try to work things out. That is, if your armies stop attacking innocent villages,” she says, moving closer to him. He smiles, “Done,” he says, kissing her passionately. She returns the kiss and wraps her arms around his neck. From the bushes, Gabrielle watches them and smiles, “This should be interesting,” she says quietly. Then she adds, “A kinder, gentler God of War. Miracles really do happen.” She smiles at the two, then returns to camp and lies in her bedroll. She’s still awake when Xena returns awhile later. She looks up at her friend, “So, things are going to be different now, aren’t they?” Xena smiles, “Yes, they will be,” she says, lying down happily. Gabrielle smiles at Xena, who’s lying on her bedroll in pure contentment.
