Lissia's Xena/Ares Fan Fiction
Ares jumps as the
wall implodes. Grabbing Xena tightly, he
disappears with her in a spark of light.
They land gently on a silk covered bed.
When he looks at Xena, she’s glaring at him. “What?”
He asks, “We made a deal. I was
protecting my investment.” Xena slaps
him hard, “What about my baby? And
Gabrielle? And my mother? And all of Amphipolis? Did you think about them? No!
You were too busy thinking about what you were going to get from
me! Return me Ares, or I swear, I’ll-” “Chill,” he cuts her off, “Your mother,
Gabrielle, and Eve are safe. And once
Athena realizes that you and Eve are gone, Amphipolis will be too.” She glares at him, “Where are we Ares? More importantly, where are they?” Ares chuckles, “We are in my palace on Mount
Olympus and they are standing in front of the closet door. Don’t look Xena. Your mother looks mad and disgusted and
Gabrielle seems a little irritated. You
know something? She’s starting to act
more and more like you. I’ll leave you
four alone, Athena’s sure to be plenty mad right now. Don’t worry, you’re all safe here,” he says,
standing up, “Xena, you should know your way around. Nothing has changed, at least not in this
room. And very little has changed around
the Palace.” With that he
disappears. Xena stands up, wanting to
collect Eve, but seeing her mother’s wide-eyed stare and Gabrielle’s smirk, she
sits back down, collecting a silk sheet around her, “Mom, I can explain.” “Well, you had better. I mean, sure, he’s cute and all...a hunk
really, but Xena, he’s the God of War.
Tell me you aren’t going to make me a Grandmother again...because of
him,” she says hysterically. Gabrielle
stops Xena’s reply, asking, “Xena, where are we? Other than where he says we are, that
is.” Xena glances around and takes in
the room, a look of surprise flickers across her face, “It’s my room,” she says
quietly. Xena rises from the bed,
holding the silk sheets around herself, and letting the ends trail on the floor
and walks to her closet. Dropping the
sheet, she slips into a loose, silk dress, “This will have to do until Ares
gets my armor for me.” Xena turns around
to see Gabrielle in the closet with her, looking very shocked, “You have a room
in Ares palace on Mount Olympus? And you
have dresses? Lot’s of dresses?” Xena blushes a little, “Ares and I were very
close, Gabrielle. And I only wore these
to parties. My other armors are in Ares’
room and I don’t know if that’s still open to me,” she says, slightly
embarrassed. Xena walks out of the
closet to find Cyrene going through her dresser, “Mom!” “What Xena?
These are really nice. It’s
odd. It took the God of War to bring out
your feminine side. Oh, by the way, Eve
made a mess in her diaper,” Cyrene says casually. Xena wrinkles her nose and says to Eve, “Nice
timing sweetie. I don’t have anything to
put you in.” Her eyes go up to her
mother’s, “There’s a basin of water by the bed, it will be warm. Bathe her while I try to find someone with
clean baby clothes and diapers.” Xena
opens the door and begins to leave when Gabrielle grabs her arm, “I’m going
with you,” she says firmly. Xena shakes
her head, “No, Gabrielle. Some of these
people might still recognize me and I should be able to get into a few of the
off-limit areas. But I have to go
alone. Stay here, with mom and Eve. We should be safe here, but with Zeus and
Hera dead, who knows what’s happened up here.
I need you to protect Eve, just in case.” Gabrielle nods and Xena leaves the room.
Xena looks down the hall in both directions and sees no one. She heads to the right and enters Ares’ room. As she shuts the door behind her, she whirls around, reaching for her sword, but not finding it, “Show yourself,” she orders. A bright light reveals a small blonde girl lounging on the bed, “Wow Xe! Long time no see. What’s up?” Xena smiles, “Lissia. So you’re still hanging around with him?” Lissia jumps up and gives Xena a hug, “I’m sensing that you need something.” Xena hugs her back, “Yeah, I need a diaper and baby clothes,” she says with a blush. “And you thought you could find that in Ar’s room?” Lissia winks at her and a bag appears on the bed, “Xena, I’m glad you’re back,” she says, grabbing the bag and leading Xena out of the room. Xena smiles at her, “Me too,” she says, closing the door. They head back towards Xena’s room, reminiscing about the old days.
Gabrielle stands at the door and tenses when she hears laughter and footsteps approaching, “Cyrene, someone’s coming.” Cyrene glances at her as she holds Eve in the basin of warm water, “It’s probably Xena,” she says lightly. Gabrielle shakes her head, “No, there’s two of them, and they’re laughing. Take Eve and go into the closet,” she orders. Cyrene obeys only because it’s what Xena would have wanted. As the door opens Gabrielle attacks, kicking the first person and raising her sais to the second. The sais are easily kicked from her hand, “Easy Gabrielle. It’s alright,” Xena says. Gabrielle looks behind Xena, to the one she had kicked and sees a dainty blonde, “Xena, who is that?” The girl walks in, “Wow, Xe, you never mentioned me to your little friend. I’m hurt. Anyway, onto the introductions! I’m Lissia, Ares’ younger cousin. Xe and I have been friends for a long time.” Not feeling comfortable with the situation, Gabrielle steps between Lissia and the closet. “I told you it was Xena,” Cyrene says exiting the closet with Eve. Xena takes Eve from her and the bag from Lissia. Laying Eve on the bed, she rummages through the bag. Lissia rushes over, “Put this on her,” she says pulling out a pink one-sy with a frilly dress attached. Gabrielle comes over, “Who are you supposed to be? A cross between Aphrodite and Ares?” Lissia looks up at her, “Chill. I lived as a mortal once. I understand you a lot better than you think I do.” Xena puts a hand on Gabrielle’s shoulder as Cyrene and Lissia dress Eve and fawn over her, “It’s alright. We can trust her,” she says gently. Sarcastically, Gabrielle replies, “Yes, well, you also seem to think that we can trust Ares and we all know that he can not be trusted.” There’s a flash of light, “Is that so?” Asks Ares as he hands Xena her armor and sword. She sets those down and looks at him expectantly, “Chakram,” she demands, holding out her hand. He smiles, “You shouldn’t leave such a priceless gift laying around,” he says, handing it to her. She snatches it away with a smirk and attempts to attach it to her hip, only to remember that she’s wearing a silk dress. She sets it down on her bed stand and picks up Eve, who immediately tries to suckle her. Not thinking anything of the company, she lets her dress strap fall so that Eve can nurse. After making sure that Eve is comfortable, she looks up, all business, “What’s the status of Amphipolis? Ares shrugs, “Athena withdrew a little. But only because she knows that you are here, safe and sound, and unable to leave.” Xena slowly nods, then switches sides with Eve so that she can continue nursing. Ares stares for a minute, then catches himself, “The room to your left is open. Your room isn’t big enough for all of you, so Gabrielle and Cyrene can stay there. Thanks to Aphrodite, there are clothes there that should fit. She also arranged for us to have dinner in two hours. Xena, you know where the main hall is. If you need anything, I’ll be in my room and Lissia will be in hers. Don’t hesitate to ask for anything,” he says. He leaves through the door and Lissia disappears into the ether at Xena’s nod.
Cyrene sits on the bed by Xena and smoothes Eve’s hair down gently, “Ares said to the left, right?” Xena nods, “Yes, the first door to the left of mine. If you keep going that way, you’ll find the bathing area. Other than Lissia and Ares, we should be the only ones aloud in there.” Cyrene smiles, “That’s a wonderful idea. Will this dinner be anything like the last one Aphrodite held?” At Xena’s nod, she says, “Well, then, I had better make myself look presentable.” Cyrene leaves the room, leaving Gabrielle and Xena alone. Eve burps, as Xena finishes nursing her and looks up at her friend, “Look, I know you’re not comfortable with this arrangement, but at least Eve is safe. I can’t risk anything happening to her, it would destroy me, Gabrielle. She means too much to me.” Gabrielle nods and takes Eve from Xena, gently rocking her, “I understand how you feel, Xena. But, how can you trust them? They’re Gods, our enemies,” she says, stressing the last part. Xena looks down, “Aphrodite won’t hurt her, Lissia won’t hurt a fly, much less a baby, and Ares, well, I don’t think he’ll hurt her. Gabrielle, he cares about me and that will keep him from doing anything to Eve. Anyway, underneath it all, he really is sweet and gentle and well, a softy, at least when it comes to those he’s close to. He won’t hurt Eve and here we’re safe from the other Gods.” Gabrielle sighs and lays Eve down on the bed, “I hope you’re right Xena. I’m going to join your mother and keep an eye open for trouble. I’ll see you at dinner,” she says, opening the door. “I’ll come by and pick up you and mom before I head to the main hall.” Gabrielle nods and walks out of the door, closing it quietly behind her.
While Eve sleeps, Xena hangs her leather and armor in the closet and finds a stand for her sword, Chakram, and daggers. She goes into the closet, keeping an eye on Eve, and finds a velvet, crimson, form fitting dress to wear to dinner. She lays the dress down on the bed, and opens the dresser drawers. Tears sting her eyes as she takes in the sight of the jewelry that she hasn’t seen in far too many years. Sifting through the items, she finds two black, velvet boxes that weren’t there when she left. She picks them up and sits down on the bed, beside Eve. She carefully looks the boxes over, trying to remember them, then opens one. “Oh my,” she gasps. In the box sits a ruby and diamond choker. Setting the box down, she picks up the second, smaller one and opens it. Tears sting her eyes as she takes in the stunning ring. It’s a ruby, dark and true, studded with diamonds along it’s edges with a white band. Eve gurgles at her. “Hello darling,” she says, scooping her up and walking out the door. She goes directly to Ares’ room and quietly enters the room. He steps out of the closet, which she knows has more weapons in it than clothes, “Are you okay? Is there something wrong with Eve?” He asks, looking them both over. Xena smiles, “We’re fine. The truth is, I wasn’t sure where to find Lis. You see, it’s hard for me to get ready and watch Eve at the same time. I can’t leave her on the bed because she likes to roll. Would you watch her and have Lis bring her back to me a little before dinner?” She asks casually. Ares stares at her, amazed, “You trust me that much?” She nods as Ares walks up to her. He leans over and gently kisses her, which she doesn’t return, but doesn’t fight off either. “I’ll watch her,” he says, holding his arms out awkwardly. Xena laughs, “Sit down,” she orders. He sits on the edge of the bed and she places Eve in his arms, “There, you’ll be fine. If she starts to cry, walk around with her, gently rocking her. You could also try singing to her, she likes that,” she says, leaving the room. Ares head jerks up in time to see Xena shut the door behind her. He looks down at the baby, “Okay, kid, it’s just you and me.” She reaches up and begins to gnaw on his necklace, sending little dribbles of drool down his chest. He attempts to remove the necklace from her grasp, but at her shriek, he decides to leave well enough alone. “I hope Xena appreciates this. I don’t let just any baby drool on me.”
In her room, Xena falls on the bed, laughing to herself. “The God of War babysitting,” she says between laughs. “What?” Asks a voice at the door. Xena sits up, “Oh, Gabrielle, it’s alright. Don’t look so shocked. He’ll never admit it, but he’s pretty good with babies.” Gabrielle stares at her in shock, “Xena! What is wrong with you? This is Ares we’re talking about! You know, the God of War. The man who sided with Dahok and got my daughter pregnant! The man who killed Eli! And you just left your daughter with him! Are you insane?” Gabrielle yells at her. Nonchalantly, Xena lets the silk dress slide off and slips into the velvet one. Zipping it up, she turns to Gabrielle, “Trust me, it’s going to be okay. Now, go get dressed. And if you don’t like any of the shoes, don’t worry. Only Ares wears shoes to dinner around here.” Gabrielle stares at her, “Xena!” She yells. Xena looks at her, irritated, “Look, I wouldn’t put my daughter in danger. We’re safe here. Gabrielle, I know what I’m talking about. After all, I did live here at one point in time. Trust me.” At Gabrielle’s nod, she says, “Go get dressed and try to relax. It’s all okay now.” Gabrielle leaves the room and Xena opens the black boxes. She carefully slips on the ring and the necklace, then looks in the mirror. Grunting, she begins to brush her hair out. As she finishes, there’s a burst of light behind her, leaving Lissia in it’s afterglow. Eve is in her arms, gnawing on Ares’ necklace. Xena takes Eve and removes the necklace from her mouth. Giving Lissia a questioning look, she hands it to her. Lissia smiles, “She wouldn’t leave without it. I think she likes Ares. When I got there, Ares was laying on his bed, with Eve on his chest, drooling and cooing down at him. It was quite a sight.” Xena laughs at the idea of it, then motioning to her jewelry, asks, “Do you know anything about these?” Lissia nods, “He’s had those for a long time, sense before you left. I guess he finally found the right moment to give them to you. They’re beautiful aren’t they?” Xena nods, “Amazingly so.” Then she lightly adds, “Of course he always did have wonderful taste.” There’s a brief silence before Lissia says, “I’ll see you at dinner. Go get your friends, we’ll be waiting for you.” She disappears leaving Xena and Eve alone. Xena looks down at her child and sees her gnawing on Ares necklace again. She laughs and slips the chain over the baby’s head carefully. “Let’s go get the others,” she says, leaving the room.
Xena enters the room to find Gabrielle pacing in a simple blue dress and Cyrene lounging in a purple and green, full skirt dress. Gabrielle rushes to Xena and looks Eve over carefully. “Thank Eli! She’s alright. What’s she chewing on?” Xena winces at the expression, then answers the question with a laugh, “It’s Ares’ necklace. She stole it.” Cyrene comes over laughing, “Xena, have you been letting Autolycus babysit? Or maybe he’s the real father...” “Mom! Don’t start that again!” Xena exclaims. Cyrene giggles and strokes Eve’s head, then looks at her daughter, “Xena! Where did you get that necklace? It’s amazing!” Gabrielle’s head snaps over and Xena blushes. Slowly the color recedes from her cheeks, “I found it in my room in a black velvet box. Now come on, we’re going to be late for dinner. And Gabrielle, why are you wearing your boots?” “I’m bringing my sais.” Xena looks irritated, “Fine. Let’s go.” As they leave the room, Cyrene shoots Gabrielle an ‘I told you so’ look.
In the dining hall, Xena sits on Ares right, with Gabrielle next to her. Lissia sits across from Xena with Cyrene next to her. Ares and Aphrodite sit at the heads of the table. Xena places Eve in a well cushioned, wicker basket that rests on a sturdy pedestal between her and Gabrielle. She sends Ares a quick, grateful look. “Look at that Eve, you’re right up here with the rest of us,” she says, then turns to Aphrodite, “I’m glad to know you’re not against me like so many of the other Gods are.” Aphrodite laughs heartfully, “As long as she doesn’t touch my hair or drool on me, it’s all cool. Oh look Ar! She has your taste in jewelry!” Ares smirks at his sister, but before he can reply, their food arrives.
They eat in silence until dessert arrives. Ares looks at Eve, then asks Xena, “Has she tried real food yet?” Gabrielle stares at him, angrily, “She’s just a baby! She doesn’t need real food yet!” When Ares gets up, cookie in hand, she slams her chair back, startling Eve, who starts to cry. Xena scoops up Eve and puts a hand on Gabrielle’s shoulder, “Sit down. He’s just joking, right Ares?” He looks at Xena’s hand in awe, “Right,” he says sitting back down. Eve continues to cry as Xena rocks her gently, “What’s wrong honey?” As Eve begins to root, they all smile. “Well, that explains it,” Lissia says, laughing. Xena blushes and begins to fumble with her dress strap. Quickly, Ares comes over and undoes the strap, holding it in place until she has control over it. Lissia throws a light blanket which Ares snatches and places over the nursing infant. Xena pats his hand gently to say thanks, then hands him his necklace. Returning to his seat, he notices both Cyrene and Gabrielle glaring daggers at him, “What?” He asks, popping a grape into his mouth. Cyrene looks away, but Gabrielle storms over, sais in hand, “Keep your hands away from both of them. Or else, I swear, I’ll...” “Sit down, blondie,” Ares says firmly. Gabrielle gawks at him, “How dare you,” she starts as she drives a sai through his shoulder. He stands, removes the sai, and starts after Xena, who has rushed from the room. Lissia steps in front of him and grabs Gabrielle’s arm harshly, “I’ll go,” she says. Gabrielle flinches away, “To Tarturus you will! As far as I’m concerned you’re as bad as he is,” she says harshly. Lissia rolls her eyes and sends Gabrielle flying into a wall, “Sit and stay,” she orders. Gabrielle tries to stand, but Lissia sends another burst of energy at her, making her fall to the ground, hard. Ares sends his cousin a stern look as she rushes after Xena. Cyrene and Aphrodite help Gabrielle up. As Ares comes over, she throws both sais into his chest and takes off after Lissia, who’s already out of sight. Ares sighs, removes the sais from his chest and hands them to Cyrene, “I’ll be in my room if anyone needs me,” he says disappearing. Cyrene and Aphrodite share a pained look, then pick at the many desserts lining the table.
Lissia arrives at Xena’s closed door and knocks, “Xena, it’s Lissia, can I come in?” She hears movement inside, then the door unlocks. She walks in and sees Xena sitting on the bed, knees up under her chin, her head down. Lissia walks over and picks Eve up off the bed, before sitting down by Xena, “That didn’t go well,” she says quietly, then lightly adds, “If it’s any conciliation, you looked amazing. It’s a wonder Ar could even stand up.” Getting no reaction from Xena, she takes a serious tone, “Do you want to talk about it? It might help. Come on Xe, you could always talk to me before.” Xena looks up, a few tears running down her cheek, “I tried so hard and for a few minutes, I thought it worked. I felt like we were going back to the way things were. And do you want to know something? I was happy, I felt safe, and just plain happy. I should have known that the present was going to catch up with me,” she says bitterly. Lissia nods and looks down at Eve, who’s sleeping, “Why does Gabrielle hate us so much?” She asks, eyes brimming with tears. Xena reaches over and puts a hand on Lissia’s cheek, “You’re still as emotional as ever, aren’t you?” She asks, with a little laugh. Then she continues, “Ares has done a lot of things to us in the past few years...a lot of bad things.” Lissia interrupts, “But he’s sorry and wants to help. It’s not all his fault, you know. It’s just he was so confused and hurt and-.” Xena puts a finger on the Goddess’ lips, “I know. I think deep down, Gabrielle does too. But, she’s having problems forgiving him. When he impregnated Hope, it nearly destroyed her. I think the last straw was when he killed Eli. Gabrielle hasn’t even forgiven herself for letting that happen, so I doubt that she’s forgiven him. As for you, well, I guess you’re just guilty by association in her mind. After all, you two are close, I’m sure Gabrielle has picked up on that.” Lissia nods, “Right now, she has a reason to dislike me. After you left, she kind of got out of hand and I lost my temper with her. I sort of sent her flying into a wall. Don’t worry, she’s alright. Who knows, maybe I knocked some sense into her head.” Xena gives her a stern look, then lightens up, “Well, then, maybe there’s hope for us yet,” she says with a laugh. Lissia joins in on the laughter, careful not to wake Eve, then stops when she hears a knock at the door.
Gabrielle enters, looking very mad at Lissia. Lissia sets Eve down, “I think I’ll leave you two alone,” she says, shutting the door behind her. By the time Gabrielle sits on the bed, Xena is holding Eve close to her. There’s an odd silence, then Xena says, “You shouldn’t have done that. They’ve done nothing, but help. And Lissia, well, she’s the sweetest thing and you’ve treated her like a murderer. And Ares is changing, at least he’s trying. He wants to help and I want his help...” Gabrielle interrupts, “But Xena-” “No, you’re going to listen to me . Gabrielle, this place used to be my home. And when I’m here, these people, these Gods, are like family to me. Now look, I’m trying to relax and regain my strength, but most of all I’m trying to help Eve. And I think Ares and Lissia can help with that,” she ends, stroking Eve’s head gently. Gabrielle rests a hand on Xena’s, “But, what if it’s another trick?” She asks, her eyes staring deeply into Xena’s. Xena shakes her head, “It’s not. Ares wouldn’t have brought me here if it were. Look, I trust him, Mom is beginning to, and Eve trusts him. Gabrielle, try to trust him, or at least try to get along with him. If not with him, then at least with Lissia.” Gabrielle nods, “I’ll try, Xena. I’m not making any promises, but I will try.” Xena smiles and hugs her friend. Handing her Eve, she says, “I’m going to go apologize to Aphrodite and make sure that Mom can find her way back. Take care of Eve while I’m gone.” Gabrielle nods and they both leave the room, heading in opposite directions.
On her way to the main Xena runs into Cyrene, “Xena! Aphrodite’s upset. I can’t deal with her anymore. I’m going to my room.” Xena smiles, “Gabrielle and Eve are already there,” she says, then enters the main room. Aphrodite is sitting in her chair at the table, crying. Xena walks over to her and puts an arm around her, “Rough night, huh?” Aphrodite looks up at her, “Duh! That was such a major bummer! Everything was going fine until that little spat. And things only got worse after you left.” Xena nods, “That’s what I heard. Things should be a bit better from now on,” she informs the Goddess, “I better go talk to Ar.” Aphrodite looks up at her, beaming, “You called him Ar! You haven’t done that in years! You’ve forgiven him, haven’t you?” She asks. Xena winks, fills a plate with sweets and heads down the hallway.
Xena stops outside of Ares’ door to straighten her dress, then quietly walks into the room. Ares is sitting on the far end of the bed, his back to her. She sets the plate down on a nearby chair, then stealthily crawls over the bed. He notices the movement, “I’m not in the mood right now, Lis,” he says, not looking in her direction. Xena lounges back on the bed, careful not to make the bed move. Thinking that there’s no one there, Ares takes off his vest and falls back on the bed. As his head hits something warm and solid, he rolls over, a look of confusion on his face. Xena smiles at him, “You know Ar, you’re going to get hurt if you keep running your head into my legs,” she says teasingly. He looks at her questioningly, then sits up, and putting on his vest, asks, “Are you alright? You seemed upset when you ran out of the main hall.” She nods, “I’m fine. Lissia calmed me down, then I had a talk with Gabrielle. She should start acting civil towards the both of you. Lissia cried,” she says quietly. Ares nods and smiles at her, “Yeah, she’s still sensitive. Truly though, she’s gotten better. She only cries around family now. She gets violent with everyone else though. Gabrielle can attest to that.” Xena smiles at him and carefully asks, “Ar, are you alright?” She sits up and stares at him gently. He adopts a defensive look, then drops it when he sees her eyeing him. He grabs her hand gently, “Xena, I’m so sorry for everything I’ve done to you and Gabrielle.” She smiles and puts a finger over his lips, “Shh. I know and I forgive you. I forgave you earlier, that’s why I’m still here.” He looks down at her hand, resting in his. She uses a finger to move his chin up. “Now, do you forgive me?” She asks. Ares shakes his head, clearly confused, “For what?” She runs a finger down his cheek, “For not trusting you all of those times,” she answers, her lips a breath away from his. “Xena,” he starts as he moves back slightly. She laces her fingers in his vest and pulls him close, until their lips are brushing. Cautiously, he kisses her. She responds passionately and he pulls her close, holding her firmly against him. As she pushes him back onto the pillows, there’s a knock at the door and the sound of a baby wailing. Neither God nor mortal respond. There’s a second knock as Xena rolls over, placing Ares on top of her. Following the third knock, there’s a voice saying, “Xena, something’s wrong with Eve. She won’t stop crying. It just isn’t like her.” Ares rolls over and sits up as Xena gently pushes against his shoulders. He pulls away, a look of unsurity on his face, “You better go. If you need anything for Eve, just call me. I’ll come.” She leans towards his ear and whispers, “Until next time,” in a seductive voice. At the forth knock, Xena gets off the bed and walks out the door, leaving Ares to stare after her.
In the hall, the sound of wailing is bone chilling. As Gabrielle hands Eve over, she looks at Xena skeptically, “Sorry if I interrupted anything,” she says sarcastically. “Gabrielle,” she says warningly. Gabrielle sighs and puts up her hands in defeat, “None of my business, I suppose,” she says, then adds, “I should probably talk to him, you know? Prove that I’m trying to be nice.” Xena smiles and catches her arm as she reaches towards the door, “That’s not a good idea right now,” she says, thinking of the state she left him in. “Oh,” Gabrielle says sheepishly, then changes the subject, “Cyrene and I tried everything, she just won’t stop crying. We held her, we put her down, we rocked, we bounced, we sang, we changed her, we bathed her, we played with her, we ignored her, nothing helped. And an hour of her crying, has gotten really old.” Xena looks shocked at the mention of an hour going by, then looks down at Eve, “What’s wrong honey?” She asks, looking the baby over carefully.
In Xena’s room, Gabrielle and Cyrene pace as Xena sings and makes faces at Eve, who’s still crying. There’s a flash at the end of the bed and Lissia is left lounging in the afterglow. She reaches over and scoops up Eve, “What’s wrong sweetie? Come to Auntie Lissia. I’ll make it all better,” she says in a baby voice. Eve stops crying and she turns to gloat, “Magic touch.” Then the crying starts all over again, only louder. Lissia looks around embarrassed. As an idea hits her, she asks, “How old is she?” Xena replies, “About three months or so.” Lissia puts a finger in the baby’s mouth and feel around. She removes it, looking discouraged. Xena and Gabrielle stare at her, confused. Cyrene answers the unasked question, “She was feeling for teeth or gum swelling.” Lissia nods, “Yeah, and I felt nothing. Look, I’ll take her for a stroll around the palace. At least then you guys can have a break.” All the women nod, Lissia grabs a blanket and walks out of the room. Cyrene, Gabrielle, and Xena collapse onto the bed, exhausted and relishing in the quite.
Lissia returns a few hours later and finds all three asleep. Xena wakes and reaches for her sword, then stops when she sees Lissia, “Where’s Eve?” The other two women have waken and are staring at the Goddess expectantly. Lissia smiles, “Well, after an hour and a half of her screaming, I gave up and took her to Ares. As soon as he took her, I ran and enjoyed a little quite time. A few minutes ago, I went to check on them, and saw, well, come on, you guys have to see this for yourselves,” she says, opening the door. They stop at Ares’ door and Lissia cracks it open enough for them to see, Eve cradled against Ares, both sound asleep. She closes the door and then quickly goes back to Xena’s room. “That was funny,” Gabrielle says. Cyrene smiles, “That was amazing.” Xena looks at them all, “That was adorable.” At the looks of shock she receives, she looks down, “Well, at least we can all have a nice nights rest.” Getting the hint, Gabrielle and Cyrene hug Xena good night and leave the room. Xena goes to her closet and puts on a large shirt and soft pants. Going to her dresser, she takes off her jewelry and looks at Lissia, “What’s so funny?” Lissia adopts an evil smile, “So, should I have your breakfast sent to his room?” Xena’s eyes widen, then she looks thoughtful, “Yes,” she say leaving her room and a stunned Lissia behind.
Xena quietly enters his room and pulls a light blanket over Ares and Eve, then crawls under it so that Eve is resting between them. Carefully, she leans over Eve and kisses Ares. As she lies back down, his eyes flutter open. He looks at her, clearly surprised. Xena smiles, “She’s going to wake up hungry and you can’t feed her. You two looked so peaceful there that I just couldn’t move her. I thought I would join you. Unless that makes you uncomfortable,” she says, looking at him uncertainly. “I am uncomfortable,” he says, “But that could be because my leathers are covered in drool and getting stiff.” He carefully shifts in the bed and gets up. Both him and Xena freeze as a light whimper escapes Eve’s lips. “I’ll be right back,” he says, walking into the closet, grabbing a cookie as he goes. When he returns, he’s wearing a pair of loose, soft pants. Before laying down, he shoves the last of the cookie into his mouth. Xena stares at him and smiles, “Nice.” He leans over Eve, and passionately kisses Xena, then pulls back, “Good night, Xe.” He lays back down, kissing Eve on the forehead lightly. Xena looks at him softly, as Eve wraps a hand around his finger, “I love you, Ar,” she says quietly. His eyes shoot up and he reaches his other hand over to stroke her cheek, “I love you too, Xe.” Their fingers intertwine and they rest them lightly on Eve’s stomach. Soon, they are both sound asleep.
Xena awakes to the feeling of being crushed. She looks over at Eve, who’s awake and sucking on Ares’ finger. “Oh good. You’re awake and hungry. That’s real good because Mommy’s dying over here,” she says, scooping Eve up. Ares stirs slightly as Eve drops his moist finger. Xena begins to nurse the baby, sitting up straight on the bed, humming gently. Without her noticing, Ares wakes up and puts a few pillows behind her back. She instantly leans into them and moves Eve to the other side to finish nursing. As he lays back down, she catches the movement from the corner of her eye, “I didn’t mean to wake you up. But thanks, you have no idea how comfortable that makes things for me,” she says, squeezing his hand gently. He sits up and watches as Xena burps Eve, then stops her when she starts to stand up, “I’ll change her,” he says, taking Eve. “Go back to sleep,” he adds as he sets Eve down on a cherry wood table. Ares returns to the bed and lies Eve down next to Xena, then lies down himself. He places a finger in Eve’s little hand, “Hush now, little one. Mommy needs her sleep,” he says gently. Xena smiles over at him and quietly says, “A kinder, gentler God of War,” with a quiet laugh. He looks up at her and smiles, “It only took me what? Three years,” he says, remembering the conversation they had when he was mortal and fighting to get his sword back. Xena looks like she’s about to ask a question, so he reaches over and places a finger on her lips, “Shh. We’ll talk in the morning.” She nods and kisses his finger, which is still resting on her lips. She moves closer to Eve and rests a hand on her daughter’s chest. Ares watches as Xena falls asleep, then puts his arm over Eve protectively and brings it to rest on Xena’s side. Soon, he too is wondering in the land of dreams.
When he awakes, Ares sees a tray of food and on note on the table. Looking next to him, he sees Xena and Eve sound asleep. He carefully gets out of bed and goes over to the table. He picks up the note and seeing that it was from Lissia, he reads it quietly to himself, “You guys looked so cute...I just couldn’t bear the thought of waking you up. Don’t worry, Gabrielle and Cyrene didn’t peak in.” He laughs a little and sits down on the bed, beside Xena. He moves her hair away from her face and gently rubs her cheek. Bending over, he quietly says, “Xena, you might want to wake up before Eve.” Her eyes flutter open and she rolls onto her back to stare up at him, “What time is it?” She asks with a yawn. “Then suns been up for a few hours. Lissia brought us food.” She gets up, carefully, and follows him to the table. She picks up the note and reads it to herself silently, then smiles and pops a grape into her mouth, “That was sweet of her,” she says, grabbing a donut. “Xena, I want to apologize. I didn’t want to let you die in Rome, but I had no choice. I was still on the outs with the family after the whole Dahok thing. You could call it probation, I guess.” Xena nods, “I know. Well, I didn’t really know, but I thought that was the case. Anyway, it doesn’t matter now, everything worked out fine. Ares, I can’t stay here forever, you know that, right?” He looks disappointed, but says, “I know, I’ve been thinking about that. And I think I have an answer, if you’re willing.” Xena smiles, “I haven’t even asked the question yet and you already know the answer. My, my, you are quite a God, aren’t you?” She says, playfully. Then on a serious note, asks, “What’s your idea?” He smiles and nibbles on a piece of cantaloupe, “Well, first of all, no one’s leaving here, until Athena’s taken care of. You had the Hind’s Blood Dagger, if we can use that, then we can take her out. Once she’s gone and Alanis is taken care of, her followers will be of little threat to Eve,” he explains. “Well, that’s all fine and dandy, but what about us?” She asks quietly. He runs a hand over her cheek, “We’ll work something out. You can always go to my temples and I’ll always answer your calls,” he says. Eve starts to cry and he goes over and picks her up, jiggling her gently. “Ares, there’s going to be another problem and you’re holding it,” she says, watching him with the baby. At his questioning look, she continues, “Ares, Eve likes you a lot. And honestly, you’re starting to act like a father towards her.” A look of shock spreads across his face, then he looks at Eve and smiles before looking back at Xena with an evil grin, “Then maybe we should start acting more like a family.” She stares at him in shock and unable to reply. He continues, “Can’t you see it? You and me traveling around the world, helping those in need with our three kids.” Xena cuts him off, “Three?” He nods, “Yeah, three. Eve, here, and then Lissia and Gabrielle.” Xena hoots in laughter, “You know, the latter two would kill you for saying that.” He laughs, then grabbing her hand, seriously says, “Children aside. I could visit you a bit more on Earth. You could get a lot of good done with my help. We can go back to the way it used to be, only this time we’d be fighting for the right reasons. I know it won’t always be easy. But, I’m willing to try this...with you. And just think, whenever you need a break or a safe place, we could come here.” Xena stares at him, her eyes full of hope, “What about Gabrielle? She doesn’t trust or like you.” He smiles, “Ask her then. She’s had her ear against the door for quite awhile now,” he whispers. Xena lightly walks over to the door and swings it open. Gabrielle, Lissia, and Cyrene fall forward slightly, then look up at Xena. Lissia rushes in and sits on the bed. The other two enter slower, Cyrene going towards Ares and Eve, Gabrielle following Xena to the bed. Before Xena can utter a word, Gabrielle says, “Look, Xena, what you said about my not liking or trusting Ares, was right. But you love him and Eve loves him and I trust that. I want you to be happy and if that means having Ares around, then so be it. But look, I don’t want to see anything unnecessarily disturbing.” During the last bit, Gabrielle eyes both Xena and Ares in turn. Xena laughs and looks over to Ares, who’s giving her an evil smile and motioning for her to come over. As she walks over to him, he hands Eve up to Cyrene, who’s standing close by. Xena stands in front of him and gives him a quizzical look. He stands up, wrapping his arms around Xena and kissing her passionately. At first Xena stands in pure shock, then she wraps her arms around his neck and with a little jump, wraps her legs around his waist. Gabrielle comes over and taps Xena on the shoulder, “Yes, that’s what I meant. If you don’t mind I’m leaving. I’m about to be ill,” she says, walking out of the room. Ares puts her down and both laugh hysterically. They look over at the other two and see Lissia smiling, but Cyrene is hiding Eve’s eyes. The tension between Xena and her mother is almost tangible when Lissia changes the subject, “So, where’s that dagger?” Xena blushes a little, “I left it in Hope’s temple after I killed Callisto. I was so upset...I didn’t even think about it. When I went back to the lava pit, it was gone.” Lissia stares at her in shock, “Xena! That’s the first irresponsible thing I’ve ever heard of you doing. All jokes aside though, we have a problem.” Ares smiles, “No, we don’t,” he says walking into his closet. He returns to Xena’s side with a sheathed dagger, “I found it on the temple floor after you left. I thought it might prove useful.” Xena smiles and examines the dagger, “It looks like this will work. Alright, we meet up in the main hall in two hours. Everyone be ready for battle. Mom, tell Gabrielle. Oh and Mom, you’re going to be staying here to watch Eve.”
Lissia and Cyrene, still holding Eve leave the room. Xena smiles and looks at Ares, “I need my armor and weapons. I’ll be right back,” she says, tossing the sheathed dagger to him.
Xena returns in full battle gear and sits by the table, waiting for Ares to return. Getting bored, she walks over to the dresser and begins to look through the top drawer. She finds many decorative daggers and a black box. She removes the black box and sets it on the table. Sliding off the lid, she smiles. Inside is a necklace that used to be hers. She runs her fingers over the sword and chakram pendent, then puts it on. She returns the box to the drawer, then sits on the table, munching on some fruit that was left over from breakfast. Ares appears beside her in a flash of light, “Sorry. One of Athena’s subjects was snooping around my temple outside of Amphipolis. I think she was looking for you, but I didn’t take the time to ask.” Xena nods, “Does she still have Amphipolis surrounded?” He shakes his head, “No, they’re close though.” He reaches toward her neck and fingers the necklace, “Someone’s been snooping,” he says, with a smile. “It’s mine anyway. Even if I did throw it at you after I ran the Gauntlet,” she replies. They stare at each other for a few minutes, then Xena asks, “Do you have any armies close? Preferably ones that will take orders from me or Gabrielle.” He nods, “I have one on the south side of Amphipolis, so does Lissia.” She looks at him questioningly. He explains, “They’re there just in case Athena wants to play dirty. So far, they’ve gotten no action.” Xena nods thoughtfully, “I have a plan. You and I have to take out Athena and Alanis. But to do that, we have to keep her armies busy. Gabrielle and Lissia can lead our armies against Athena’s. They both know how to fight and can hold their own. They can also command troops just fine. We don’t need the armies destroyed, just discouraged. While her armies and ours are going at it, you and I will take out Athena and her girlfriend,” she explains. Ares nods, “Athena’s army is on the north side, ours on the south. Gabrielle can lead my army around the western side while Lissia comes up the eastern side. Athena’s men will be trapped in the middle with no place to go except forwards and backwards. We should fight Athena and Alanis in the forward position, directly in front of Amphipolis. That will leave the back open for a retreat when they see her and Alanis die at our hands,” he adds. Xena smiles, “I think it’ll work. Will your men obey Gabrielle?” She asks, eyeing him curiously. He smiles, “As long as she’s wearing one of my medallions they will listen,” he says, handing Xena a large, round, golden medallion engraved with the designs of the God of War on a thick chain. She turns it over in her hand a few times, “This is going to work.” They grasp hands, collect a few extra weapons, and head to the main hall where the others and lunch await them.
Xena walks into the main room and takes Eve from Cyrene, “Alright honey, I hope you’re hungry because Mommy’s about to burst,” she says sitting down with Eve and unhooking her breastplate. Lissia places a light blanket over the nursing Eve, “So, what’s the plan? Obviously we’re getting rid of Athena and her pet, but what about her armies?” Xena smiles softly, “That’s where you and Gabrielle come in. Lissia you’re going to lead your army from the south up the eastern side of Amphipolis. Gabrielle, you’re leading Ares’ army up the western side. Ares and I will take care of Athena and Alanis.” Xena tosses the medallion to Gabrielle. Gabrielle looks it over and tosses it back to her, “I don’t think so. I am not one of his warlords,” she says. Ares takes the necklace from Xena and walks over to Gabrielle, placing it around her neck, “You will wear this or my men won’t obey you. Listen Gabrielle, we need your cooperation. This medallion proves that you have my blessing and are acting in accord with my will. With this, they will obey every word that exits your mouth.” She sighs dramatically, then nods, “When do we leave?” Xena looks at Lissia, Gabrielle, and Ares in turn, “After we eat. And let’s stop by the armory on the way. I want to grab a few new toys,” she says shifting Eve and the blanket.
An hour later, the two Gods and two mortals stand in the armory doorway, fully armed for battle. Gabrielle wears a sword on her back, a dagger on her hip and her sais hooked to her boots. Xena has her sword, Chakram, breast dagger, and a dagger in each of her boots. Lissia, the Goddess of War, carries very little. She carries a staff in her hands and a dagger in her breast plate. Ares has his sword at hand, several daggers attached to the inside of his vest, and the Hind’s Blood Dagger on his hip. Gabrielle looks around intently, “This is it. Let’s get this over with.” In two separate flashes of light, they all disappear. Lissia and Gabrielle arrive at the heads of their separate armies. Xena and Ares stand in front of Amphipolis starring directly at Athena and Alanis. Within minutes Athena’s armies are engaged on both the western and eastern front. Moments before that happens, Athena and Alanis clashed swords with Ares and Xena.
Ares’ army led by Gabrielle strikes hard and fast. With a loud cry, Lissia and her army join the battle. The two leaders fight toward one another, straight through Athena’s army. Coming back to back with one another, Gabrielle and Lissia move as one, defeating all those that come near them. They circle around, continuously knocking back Athena’s men. As the men realize that these two are the real threat in the battle, they start attacking in groups of five and six. Gabrielle looks around, “Why won’t they retreat? They’re not going to win,” she yells to Lissia. Knocking a soldier across the face with her staff, Lissia answers, “Athena will kill them if they retreat. Don’t worry, once Ar and Xe take care of Athena and Alanis, this battle will be short lived.” They continue to fight back to back, swords, daggers, arrows, and staffs flying all around them.
Athena lets out a terrible cry and charges Ares, “Traitor,” she yells. Alanis takes that as her cue and strikes at Xena. Xena parries with her sword. Hearing war cries, they both risk a glance at their Gods who are furiously battling one another. The two Gods are moving as if in a dance, each move perfectly matched by the next. Drawing the Hind’s Blood Dagger, Ares begins to parry with his sword and strike out with the dagger, hoping to catch an open spot in Athena’s defense. Xena draws her Chakram and sends it flying in a wild arc, as she parries Alanis’ blows which are coming harder and faster by the second. As the Chakram speeds past Ares, he glances at Xena who is locked in fierce battle with Alanis. “What’s wrong, brother? Worried about you girlfriend?” Athena asks with a sneer. Ares shrugs, “Me? No,” he says, then glances at Alanis, “Worried about yours?” Athena turns sharply, just in time to see Xena’s Chakram deflect Alanis’ sword, knocking it from her hand. Xena plunges her sword into the woman’s chest as Athena yells, “Alanis! No,” and takes a step towards her fallen lover. This small opening was all Ares needed, he shoved the dagger into his sister’s gut, “Enjoy,” he says, as she falls to the ground, a look of shock spread across her face. The ground begins to quake as Athena dies beside her lover, Alanis. Ares rushes over to Xena, “We did it,” he says, wrapping an arm around her. She smiles up at him, “Yes we did. Now, let’s go join the rest of the battle,” she says.
Ares and Xena fight their way through the armies until they reach Gabrielle and Lissia. “They’re dead?” Gabrielle asks as she hits a man in the head with the butt end of her sword. Xena tosses a dagger at a man behind Gabrielle, hitting him in the forehead, “Yes and soon these men will realize it and start to retreat like frightened pigs,” she says, sending her Chakram on a flight that takes out four archers. Lissia points a stolen sword in the direction of the forest, “It looks like some of them already are. Ar, let’s encourage their flight,” she says, a twinkle in her eye. Ares smiles and the two Gods shoot small lightening bolts at the retreating soldiers. Lissia smiles as she sees one of her generals getting closer. “They’re almost defeated, Goddess,” he says with a slight bow, before killing an archer that had followed him. “Damage report,” she orders, killing a man that has come up behind her. “The second and third groups are destroyed. The first and fourth are holding their own.” He turns to Ares, “Lord Ares, under Special Force Commander Gabrielle your men are doing well. Your archers have joined the ground fight. Unfortunately, most of them are dead or dying. The first group is totally wiped out, but the second and third groups are holding up real well.” Ares nods and smiles at Gabrielle, who’s blushing. A large group of Athena’s soldiers run past them, towards the forest, gaining in numbers as they go. Xena strikes at a few of them, making sure not to actually hit them. Suddenly, she looks around and sees that they are surrounded. She draws her Chakram and prepares to throw it, when Ares grabs her wrist gently, “Xena, these are ours. That was the last group of Athena’s men. They’re gone, we’ve won,” he says, pulling her close. As they kiss deeply, Gabrielle and Lissia turn towards the armies. Lissia says, “You’ve all done well. Give the dead a proper burial and contact their families, then go home. Your Gods are very pleased.” Under her breath, she adds, “One more than the other.” Gabrielle clears her throat, “Let’s go,” she says. Ares and Xena separate, “I’ll see you back at my place,” he says as he disappears into the ether. Lissia grabs Gabrielle and exits the battlefield through the ether.
Xena smiles at Gabrielle as she exits the ether, “You’re bleeding,” she says lightly. Gabrielle smiles back at her, “So are you.” Xena winces a little as Ares cleans a cut on her outer thigh. Lissia urges Gabrielle to sit on the table, next to Xena, “Come on, let me see that arm.” Gabrielle winces as Lissia examines the deep gash, “For such a delicate person, you have a rough touch,” she says, pulling her arm away. Lissia looks down, “Sorry, my nerves are a little fried.” Ares puts an arm around his cousin, “Go lay down. I’ll take care of both of them.” Lissia nods, then stumbles down the hallway towards her room. Gabrielle stares after her curiously. “She doesn’t like battle,” Ares says, as he looks at Gabrielle’s arm. She nods and looks at Ares, amazed by his gentle touch, “Then why does she do it?” Xena answers, looking at a cut on Gabrielle’s cheek, “Because she has to. It’s not the battle itself that bothers her, it’s the death and destruction that happen because of the battle. Even with her amazing powers, the deaths of so many leave her drained. Their deaths hurt her.” Gabrielle nods in understanding, then looks confused, “Amazing powers?” She asks. Ares smiles and glances at Xena, “So, you haven’t told her Lissia’s little secret.” Xena shakes her head, “I thought you should explain it,” she says, cleaning a scratch on her own chest. Ares explains, “Lissia’s powers, as a Goddess, are stronger than any other God’s. Her powers would rival those of Dahok. I found her, living as a mortal and it’s because of her mortal ties that she’s so strong. Her powers and reverence for life frightened both Zeus and Hera. You see, when I found her, Lissia was out of control. She couldn’t harness her strength and had an odd habit of blowing things up. So, she was given to me to train. I had just gotten her under control when Xena started staying here. If it wasn’t for Xena, I don’t know what I would have done with Lissia. That girl still needed amazing amounts of attention and I couldn’t always give it to her. Xena stood in for me on several occasions.” Xena smiles at Gabrielle’s awed look, “You should ask her about it. She’ll tell you everything. It might take awhile, but it’s truly an amazing story.” Xena slides off the table and walks to the other end where food is waiting. Ares finishes Gabrielle’s arm and moves onto a deep gash on her lower leg, “This barely missed a section of muscle. You’re lucky,” he says while cleaning the cut. After a few minutes, he wraps a tight bandage around it and helps her off the table. She limps down to the other end of the table and sits by Xena. She looks at her arm and leg, then at Xena, “We can’t get these wet for a few days, can we?” Xena laughs, “With the salve Ares put on our injuries, they should be fine in just a few minutes. You’ll still be swore, but all that will be there is a nice scar.” Gabrielle smiles and eats a pheasant breast. Xena munches on some bread and cheese, then looks over at Ares, who stares right back at her. Gabrielle clears her throat and Ares looks away from Xena, “I’ll transport you two to the bathing area. There will be robes waiting for you when you’re done.” Xena nods, “Tell Mom to bring Eve to me in about half an hour. At least, that’ll give me enough time to get clean.” Ares nods and takes the hands of both women.
The three of them appear in the bathing area. Gabrielle smiles and removes the medallion Ares had given her, “Thank you,” she says gently. He nods and removes Xena’s necklace. As she starts to object he says, “It’ll be in your room...Clean.” She smiles as he walks out of the room. Seconds later, Xena and Gabrielle are peeling of their armor, leather, weapons, and bandages. They slip into the steaming water and watch as the filth of battle melts off their bodies. Xena looks at the water around her, “You know, this water should already be nasty. But, the beauty of Olympus is in it’s self cleaning water,” she says, dipping her head under the water. Gabrielle smiles and grabs a scented cloth. Using it to scrub every inch of her body, she says, “I could get used to this. It’s going to be hard to bathe in a stream after this.” Xena emerges from under the water and smiles, “Toss me the oil bottle.” Gabrielle smiles and throws the bottle at Xena, who slathers her hair with the scented liquid. As she rinses her hair, Cyrene walks in with Eve, looking down at the dirty clothes and bloodied weapons. Xena reaches out for Eve, “How was she today?” Cyrene shrugs and slips into the water, “She was a little cranky. I just woke her up from a nap. She should be starving.” Xena moves to the shallow end of the tub and nurses Eve, “The battle went well. Athena and Alanis are dead, her army defeated. We should be fairly safe now, back on the mortal plane that is.” Cyrene nods, “I talked to Ares, he said he’d take me back to Amphipolis after dinner. He also said something about you two leaving your clothes and weapons in here.” Xena nods and an odd silence fall over the women. Cyrene breaks it, asking, “So, how long are you guys staying here?” Gabrielle answers, “At least another couple of days.” Xena beams at her, then says, “Eve and I are going to my room. I’m starting to get all pruney.” Gabrielle and Cyrene share a knowing smile as Xena walks out of the room, a robe lightly wrapped around her.
Xena sighs and sets Eve on the bed as she walks into her closet. She puts on a light shirt that goes down past her knees. She lounges on the bed by Eve, stroking the baby’s hair down. “Ares,” she calls gently. He appears directly inside of her door, “You called?” Xena smiles at him and pats the bed beside Eve. He sits down and scoops up Eve, who starts to coo at him. “How’s Lissia?” Xena asks. Ares shrugs, “Drained. She should be fine by dinner. Now, I’m sure you didn’t call me here to talk about her. What’s up?” She laughs a little, “You’re right. I just wanted to talk. We’re going to stay for a few more days and then I was hoping, you would join us on the mortal plane. I’m worried that Athena’s men are going to stir up trouble.” He nods, “That sounds perfect,” he says, leaning in to briefly kiss her. They stare at each other for a few seconds, then they lay down on the bed, letting Eve rest between them. Slowly the room darkens as Ares causes the candles to go out and the curtains to close. Soon they are all sound asleep, traveling through the shared dream world of two lovers.
-End
